Alan Day

Alan Day graduated Wilkes Central High School 1978, and earned his Business Degree, Roanoke, VA 1983. He worked in TN for one year in a fire extinguisher plant, then moved back to Wilkes to help with family business “Nancy King Textiles.” In his 22 years at the company, Alan moved from shipping clerk to plant manager, then to VP advertising marketing, and finaly to Assistant General Manager.

Alan has been a volunteer fireman/First Responder for 20 years with the North Wilkesboro Fire Department.

When the local manufacturing jobs left the area, Alan went to Culinary School at Wilkes Community College where he received his degree in culinary arts in 2006. He opened Applewood Bistro in April 2007 with his wife Angela.

Thua Nguyen

Chef Thua Nguyen presents International Night every Thursday at Applewood and prepares dishes such as Pho, a noodle soup with beef or seafood and lots of steamed vegetables. Saturday evenings may find wild game on the menu: boar, antelope and elk. “He’s an outstanding chef,” says Alan Day, “who is highly skilled in utilizing food.” It’s the norm for Alan to advise diners on ordering to individualize and satisfy their level of spicy tolerance.

Award winning chef, Thua and his wife Phyllis have one son who is a computer programmer. Enthusiasm is his mantra and he enjoys sharing his creations and meeting the visitors who consume them.
